A seminar entitled “Designing Population Policy in the Context of Environmental Challenges at the Local Level” was held on 4 November at the Regional Centre for Professional Development of Education Employees in Smederevo.

The seminar was organized as a project activity within POPENVIROS – Population Dynamics under Environmental Challenges in Serbia, a project funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia through the PRISMA Programme.

During the seminar, participants were introduced to the POPENVIROS project and to research topics related to environmental challenges, fertility, mortality, and migration. The event brought together representatives of local environmental organizations, geography and biology teachers, students from the Smederevo Gymnasium participating in the elective course Education for Sustainable Development, spatial planners, and teachers of various subjects from several primary schools in Smederevo.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and learn about recommendations for local-level population policy through the publication “Guide for Population Policy in the Context of Environmental Challenges at the Local Level.” The guide presents practical recommendations for integrating demographic and environmental considerations into local development planning and policymaking.

The seminar was delivered by Petar Vasić, Vera Gligorijević, Ivan Novković, and Ivan Marinković, who presented key project findings and highlighted the importance of addressing demographic challenges within the broader context of environmental change and sustainable development.

The event contributed to strengthening dialogue between researchers, educators, local stakeholders, and civil society organizations, promoting the use of scientific evidence in the development of population policies tailored to local environmental challenges.
